The IGES 5.x Preservation Society (IPS) HomePage
"Working on data exchange is like a drug conviction ... it stays on your record."The IGES 5.x Preservation Society (IPS) is a non-profit, non-member organization supported by the volunteer efforts and contributions of individuals and corporations involved in the digital Product Definition Data Interoperability (PDDI) enterprise.
<Nikolay Shulga>
The IPS is in no way supported, funded, or endorsed by either the IGES/PDES Organization (IPO) or the US Product Data Association (USPRO), although many of the contributors to the IPS also are active members of one or both of them.
Contact the WebMaster for approval of content and permission to FTP any IGES related test suites or technical committee draft documents into the archives.
This archive is anarchistic ... there are no restrictions on format. If you can get it off of those 5¼ inch floppies, you can put it here, and it will go onto the next CD-ROM backup.
Even if you don't have a scanner, if you send the pages by FAX we can still archive the 200x200 dpi image that comes through the phone wire. OTOH, I do not recommend this, but merely suggest it as an option of last resort. (Like you're on your way out the door, you don't want to take it with you, and you're pretty sure it's the only copy left in the world.)
These electronic documents are not covered by any copyright, and are being made available on the World Wide Web at no cost. In some cases, the RFCs never made it through a committee or ballot process because they were too contentious or lacked support. Some were rejected as "solutions" more appropriate to STEP. However, they nonetheless represent a substantial investment of man-hours, and without the IPS, they would be lost.
In addition, the IPS will serve as WWW resource for DoD documents such as MIL-PRF-28000, sample IGES files from the CALS Test Network and IPO Testing Project, as well as user and vendor supplied IGES test files from trade shows, demonstrations, and internal testing of IGES translators.
As a sanity check, both the IGES Editor and the Assistant IGES Editor took the full set of LaTeX files and re-ran them so that the page, section, and figure numbers would be regenerated. They possessed different TeX systems and hardware platforms, but they each only needed to print a half-dozen randomly selected pages and compared their output by phone.
This archive of LaTeX files, dated 1992-01-26 (and the IGES files for the figures), are the basis for the HTML hyperlinked version presented here. Note that the section and page numbers do not always match the IGES 5.1 section and page numbers, nor has this version ever been submitted for ANSI approval.
You should not use IGES5.x as a cited reference for any contractually obliged IGES performance issues, because it is not an "official" version of the IGES Standard ... It is a draft document used by previous IGES editors during the transition from IGES 5.1 to IGES 5.2, and it should not be confused with published, ANSI approved, and copyrighted editions, which are based on this document, but which contain changes balloted and approved by the IGES/PDES Organization (IPO) membership since 1991-09-17 (the official "closure" date for IGES 5.1 material).
2006-06-18: USPRO no longer has resources to submit a version of IGES for ANSI approval, and will soon discontinue sales of IGES 5.3, so this site has posted the last available draft (1999-01-12) as a hyperlinked PDF file, complete with the figures. The LaTeX and IGES files used to create it with PdfLaTeX (included with MiKTeK) are also available on this site.
THE PURPOSE OF THE IGES 5.X PRESERVATION SOCIETY (IPS) WORLD WIDE WEB SITE IS TO ARCHIVE AND DISSEMINATE INFORMATION ON PAST AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS AND TESTING OF THE INITIAL GRAPHICS EXCHANGE SPECIFICATION (IGES), AN INTERNATIONALLY USED AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD FOR DIGITAL PRODUCT DEFINITION DATA INTEROPERABILITY.
